Can great coffee at home be easy?

We'd like to think it can. We know you love coffee, so let us show you how to love making it without it taking over your life.

There's some simple fundamentals.

And none of them have to be expensive.

At it's core we're talking about water, beans and something to brew them together in. If you like the way it tastes, then your main aim is to know what you did so you can repeat it tomorrow. As equipment scales up in complexity and price, that's most of what is being attempted - tighter control over water, coffee grinding and the brewing conditions.

We think a good place to start is with what you like to drink, and from there we can show you how to get there with a different range of budgets.

I like latte's, flat whites and capuccinos.

Well you love espresso based drinks from a cafe then. Which ironically originally being from Italy, is now the Australian way. You'll need a home espresso machine, which can brew espresso, steam milk and dispense hot water. We highly recommend a grinder alongside it.

$500 -$1000
This is the entry point for your journey. Look for a machine that has an in-built grinder. Breville is honestly a great brand in this price bracket.

$1000 -$3000
We're getting fancy now. While still offering the same as above, here you'll find more control over temperature, more powerful pumps for your espresso and importantly, quality grinders separate from the espresso machine that really elevate flavour.

The coffee to choose
Look for a medium or darker espresso roast. Especially aim for flavour notes like chocolate, toffee, caramel - things that sound like they'd taste great in milk and avoid descriptions too weighted towards citrus and stonefruit.

We'd recommend The High Road from our range.

I really enjoy black filter coffee.

Not only are you going to save some budget and bench space, but drink beautiful coffee too! There's a lot of freedom if you choose this approach both from the equipment end and the coffee you choose.

$100 -$300
Get yourself the best grinder you can afford and in this price range, we're probably talking a manual, hand grinder. From there, pick from Hario V60, Aeropress or Delter Press.

$300 -$1000
We're actually still talking grinders here mostly but you can choose a high quality home grinder tailored to filter grinding. You could also at this stage invest in some helpful tools such as scales and an electronic kettle for precise temperature control.

The coffee to choose
Knowing you're brewing a softer coffee and drinking it black, you have great freedom in your coffee choice. Look to enjoy lighter roasts, fruity and tropical flavour notes.
