Stove-top Brewing

Been given a Moka-pot and you ain't got a clue on what to do?

Here's an easy step-by-step guide on how to brew coffee on the stove, at home, in a national park, anywhere with fire 🔥

Here's what to do:

  1. If you can, freshly grind your coffee for a Moka pot. It should be slightly coarser than an espresso-grind, similar to table salt.

  2. Fill base of pot with hot water (don't fill past the valve!).
    Less time on stove = Less time for grinds to develop bitterness.

  3. Make sure your coffee basket is in the pot before filling it in with ground coffee all the way to the top — but don't pack it in!

  4. Screw the top on tight, pop on stove and light your fire 🔥

  5. Pop the top lid open and watch 👀 Once delicious coffee starts pouring out, keep a watch for when the rich liquid turns pale in colour. Switch off the heat immediately when it's pale.

  6. Wipe the base of the pot with a cold, damp cloth to stop the brewing process, or pour straight into your cup and enjoy!

Useful tips...

  • Always try to avoid the end of the brewing process, where it starts hissing steam. This part of the process will only impart a harsh bitterness to the drink

  • Give your moka pot a good rinse with just water and let it dry.

    Detergent is unnecessary as it will only strip away the coffee oils on the surface, which would help with the metallic taste some brand new (aluminium) moka pots have. Just as your pan needs seasoning, so does some moka pots!
