When Looking to Buy Coffee Online, Consider…

When looking into which coffee beans you should invest your money in, your nose is often your best friend. Unfortunately, when buying online, you can’t exactly sniff around for what smells good. So how else do you find great coffee? Here are some things to consider when you’re about to buy coffee online.

  • What is your price range?

As a very general rule, you get what you pay for. If you want good coffee, it doesn’t come cheap – it has to cross the globe for the coffee beans to get to Australia first! So yes, while you can get low-cost coffee from the supermarket, the difference between that and a fresh bag from a boutique roaster should be pretty stark for a number of reasons. The first being small growers tend to be able to take more care with their product. A hand-picked coffee will usually be of higher grade than a mechanical harvested one but small farmers are of little use to a big coffee company. Choosing a boutique coffee roaster is often a simple way of getting access to high-quality coffee beans. We are a small coffee business ourselves and we take pride in the long-term relationships we’ve developed with the importers and producers we work with to make beautiful coffee blends year round.

  • What type of roast are you after?
Coffee roasts range from light, medium and dark, and the majority of coffee roasters will display this in their online stores. A common misconception is that a darker coffee is stronger, however this is not the case as the flavour strength or amount of caffeine comes from when it was grown, not how it is roasted. As the name may suggest though, a darker roasted coffee will have a bold bite. You will definitely taste the roast character and less of the bean itself. A medium roast is most common Australian coffee style and akin to a regular modern espresso roast. It should be full-bodied but still retain fruit character and balance in flavour. A light roast is generally tailored for filter brewed coffees and intended to be drunk without milk. This roast style will taste delicate, soft and retain a lot of the fruity, acidic and floral notes of the crop. We produce mostly medium-roasted coffees here at Hello Coffee, with the one exception being the popular Dark Seas - our tip of the hat to a traditional, darker Italian espresso style.

  • Do you take your coffee with or without milk?
This may not be something that you naturally consider before you buy coffee. However, some coffees taste better with milk than others do, so it could be best to do your research before selecting one. As a general guide, espresso blends are designed to be paired with milk, from both an origin choice and a roast style, so you’ll be safe there if a latte is your daily. If you want something to impress your friends as a black coffee, have a look for some particular origins – like Ethiopia, for example. Coffees from there are renowned for their fruity character. Look to serve them as a filter or plunger rather than espresso and you will find the delicate flavours stand out with the more gentle brewing methods.

  • Do you want flavoured coffee beans?
Something that’s particularly on the experimental end of things and rather new, you’ll see a few roasters and producers are playing with small batches of flavour altered coffees. We have examples on our online store of coffee bean batches that are stored for a period in whisky or rum barrels or even producers using varied fermentation methods at the farm to add unique flavour to their crops. It’s not something you’ll see a lot of (yet) but keep an eye out and if you’re feeling adventurous, try a bag from our shop.

  • What to choose, blends vs single origins?
A single-origin coffee refers to the bean being from one country, generally a stand-out quality crop that is worthy of trying on its own. Whereas as the name suggests, blends are created by roasters as a way of creating a consistent coffee in both flavour profile and availability throughout the year by moving different ingredients in and out. Hello Coffee offers four blends available year round in our store and usually a single Ethiopian coffee as a single-origin, which we love!

What Should I Look for?

Some additional information to look for when you buy coffee online in Australia include:
